Shameless self promotion or legitimate experiment?

Shooting up with data

Shooting up... with data!

I’m a data junkie. I love tables and graphs and charts. Google Analytics provides all kinds of awesomeness in this area. One fascinating aspect of collecting all this data is that one can see where one’s traffic is coming from (if one want’s to, which this one does).

Why do you care? Because I’m going to ask for your help with a little experiment. I want you to pick a post of mine that you like (or one that you don’t like, I’m not picky about what you pick, as long as it’s not my nose. That’s off limits) and click on one of the little linkies at the bottom of the post, the ones under Share and Enjoy. Submit the post to Digg or StumbleUpon. Those are the one’s I’m ‘specially curious about. I hear lots of hype about Digg, but I get a ton of hits from StumbleUpon. I’m curious to see if there is a direct correlation between submissions and hits and which one generates more activity.

Or I could totally just be trolling for cheap self-aggrandizement. I’ll leave it up to the sophisticated reader to decide.

A year of CyberLizardy goodness

I can’t believe I missed this. Actually, I can believe it, this is me we’re talking about. What were we talking about? Oh, yeah, my blogiversary! My foray into blogging began on 15 November 2007. I’ve maintained a site since 1999, mostly to host various programming projects I was working on and to put up pictures and stuff. But I made a decision to start blogging last year, got myself a Blogger account, and went at it. And now, here we are.

There is a year-in-review kind of meme in teh blogosphere. The only rule is to “post the link and first sentence from the first blog entry for each month of the past year.” Mine will actually go all the way back to last November in order to get 12 entries because I didn’t post anything during a couple of the months last year (don’t worry, it won’t happen again).

So enjoy this recap of the mad mad mad mad world of the CyberLizard.

  • November 2007
I suppose that it’s about time I actually started dumping this crap out of my head and out onto the net.

  • December
    The final battle of Beowulf.

  • January 2008
While staring at bag after bag of crumpled wrapping paper that inevitably follows the xmas blitz, I began to wonder about the possibilities of recycling.

  • March
Not only have I actually put together a LEGO MOC, photographed it, and published it, but I submitted it for a contest.

  • May
So chalk this one up to the same strange impulse that causes humans to crane their necks to view an accident scene or watch auto racing with the secret hope that someone will crash.

  • June
    It’s a sad day.

  • July
You can have my garden when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers

  • August
Once again, one of my pictures has been selected to appear on Insect Picture of the Day.

  • September
This is starting to get scary.

  • October
Congrats to the Rev. for his winning the August Molly award over on Pharyngula!

  • November
    Oh, boy, here we go.

  • December
Wow, that’s the longest I’ve gone without blogging anything for a while now.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno … Finally!

Our intrepid heros, having been denied a raunchy good time by Kirk Cameron and Jesus, decided that they would attempt a mad dash across the battlefield (well, really just a couple of exits up the highway, but I’m trying to create dramatic tension here) to try to make the 10:25pm showing of Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Will they make it? Will the Fireproof conspiracy follow them to another theater? Will the ticket taker be a complete dick and not let them bring in their soda and popcorn? Let’s find out…

The minivan flew down the highway like a, um, like a minivan flying down the highway. At exactly 10:25, Mrs. CyberLizard threw on the parking brake and slid the van into a parking spot with a squeal of tires (dramatic tension, remember?). We dashed inside the mall, popcorn and soda clutched in our hands and breathlessly ordered two tickets for Zack and Miri. The ticket seller was quite appalled to hear what had happened at the previous theater and found it quite amusing when Mrs. CL brandished the popcorn and declared our intent to bring it inside. Actually, the ticket taker didn’t say anything either. So no new confrontation :(

Once in the actual theater, we discovered that they were playing Fireproof! that we had only missed half of the first preview! Within a few minutes we were finally watching a movie about people making a movie about people fucking, and we were laughing our asses off.

So the evening ended in success after all. And it gave me a chance to do a couple of really cool cliffhanger blog entries. In fact, it was such a good ploy that I’ll do it again.

Tune in tomorrow night to read the CyberLizard’s amazing, fantastic, awesome review of Zack and Miri Make a Porno!

17th place isn’t too bad, right?

The wait is over. The celebrity judge for the Reasonably Clever Steampunk in 50 Pieces or Less contest (none other than Mr. Jake von Slatt of The Steampunk Workshop) has revealed the fruits of his deliberation. I actually had hopes of a high-place finish early on (silly, I know), but as the entries poured in, some of which were awesome, I despaired of taking a prize. Still, I did finish 17th out of around 90 (mine’s entry #14), so that’s pretty good. Especially for a first attempt.

Congratulations to the winners! There were some terrific entries. Here’s my personal favorite, both from a design standpoint and from the fantastic backstory that accompanies it.
