Good point about the resources and allocation. It probably all boils down to some fundamental principles of civilization or economics; Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Locke's theory of government, yada yada yada. I don't know either. But it's still fun speculating about it. Keeps the brain limber.

yeah it would, it could do alot, except if I am a greedy person. But it would seem to me not to be a size problem of the society, although yes larger scale less ineraction etc. But a problem of resources and needs and the allocation of them also the essential beliefs of that society. I suppose we could provide for everyone equally with resources and opportunity here and alsothen so would our outlook and what we admire in people. There might not be a need to scramble for the resources, to be greedy, or take advantage of others while grabbing and constantly securing your own. always worrying about yours.
Instead the outcome might be a society that admires other things like honor and duty and helping each other and the betterment of all society. I dont know

@zoemu - good question. I don't believe that people are inherently evil, that's for sure (I hope). Greedy and selfish, well, I think that by definition survival is selfish. Not that it's a bad thing, I personally like being alive. But I do think that since humans have moved beyond the raw basics of survival, those evolved traits can definitely lead to greed to the detriment of others.

But you make a good point about our society. It definitely contributes and encourages those qualities. It seems to me (I'm no anthropologist or sociologist) that the smaller the society, the less likely commerce and greed are going to dominate the society the way ours does. I would suspect that it's tied to the abstraction of others as you move beyond the capacity to have an individual relationship with each member of a community.

Whew! Was this a comment or a post? Thanks for prodding me to think.

And I suspect that 85 billion would keep more than just you afloat ;-)
