17th place isn’t too bad, right?

The wait is over. The celebrity judge for the Reasonably Clever Steampunk in 50 Pieces or Less contest (none other than Mr. Jake von Slatt of The Steampunk Workshop) has revealed the fruits of his deliberation. I actually had hopes of a high-place finish early on (silly, I know), but as the entries poured in, some of which were awesome, I despaired of taking a prize. Still, I did finish 17th out of around 90 (mine’s entry #14), so that’s pretty good. Especially for a first attempt.

Congratulations to the winners! There were some terrific entries. Here’s my personal favorite, both from a design standpoint and from the fantastic backstory that accompanies it.

It hardly seems fair that some people submitted several entries and then won multiple times. I mean, if it’s meant for the love of the Lego and the thought put into it, then one entry should be it. But if people are just in it to win, maybe several entries is normal?

That would mean you were more like, say, 12th or so.

Either way, well done! You really put a lot more into the presentation than others did, too. I think it’s pretty rad.

Multiple entries are fine. It’s clearly stated in the rules. And one person can win only one prize, so that’s why there were 13 winners listed, but only 7 prizes. I actually had a second entry in mind: the S.E.G.W.A.Y. – Steampowered Engine Gyroscopic Wagon… I couldn’t think of the last two letters. Basically a steampunk Segway. Maybe I’ll finish it anyway.

As for the presentation, it took me a bunch of googling to find out how to create that look with the Gimp. I think it came out pretty well. I’d do some things differently, but it was a rush job.
